Over a million kilograms of drugs are seized by the NDLEA, and 222 people are detained in Abia.

In just one year, the Abia State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 222 people and seized almost 1.94 million kilograms of illegal substances.

Acting Commander of NDLEA, Abia Command, Mr. Chigbu Odoemelam Chilee, briefed reporters in Aba during the week-long celebrations of the "2025 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse," which is scheduled for June 26, 2025. He said that in spite of the arrests and seizures, the command has stepped up efforts to prevent the use and sale of illegal drugs.

Chilee further revealed that the agency's only rehabilitation facility in Abia is Aba. He did, however, add that Governor Alex Otti has established plans for a second center in Umuahia, which might be operational in a few months.

"The number of arrests, seizures, and people coming for rehabilitation shows that Abia state faces a huge challenge in drug abuse and trafficking," he added, emphasizing that the issue of illicit substances in Abia cannot be overstated.

"We have seized one million and ninety-four kilograms of illicit drugs over the last year," he stated. Cannabis, sativa, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, codeine, diazepam, and so forth are examples of these substances. Methamphetamine, often referred to as mkpurummiri in our local dialect, is the most common drug here.

Additionally, in a single year, we detained 222 suspects here. We combat the war on drugs in two stages: supply reduction and demand reduction. I've provided you with the seizure statistics in supply reduction.

However, we are discussing rehabilitation and sensitization in the context of demand reduction. Given the volume of customers and the data at its disposal, the NDLEA's Abia Command boasts one of the greatest rehabilitation facilities.

The acting commander went on to say that the main hotspots for the illegal drug trade in Abia State are Aba and Umuahia.

He promised that while NDLEA Abia is doing everything in its power to stop the use and sale of illegal substances in the state, it has area commands that equally encompass the state's 17 council areas and rural areas.
