The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has refuted claims that he married his estranged wife, Regina Daniels, when she was a minor.
Speaking through a statement issued by his Communication and Technical Action Team to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nwoko clarified that he never pursued Regina for marriage and that her mother, Rita Daniels, personally introduced and brought her to him.
“For clarity, Regina Daniels was born on October 10, 2000. If she has been married to me for six years, that means she married at 19 and not 17. The public witnessed her family giving her away in marriage,” Nwoko stated.
“There were witnesses to the fact that her mother personally brought her to me. I never went after her.”
The senator’s response follows widespread criticism and backlash over allegations of child marriage and domestic abuse, which resurfaced amid his ongoing marital crisis with the popular Nollywood actress.
Two weeks ago, Regina Daniels publicly accused Nwoko of domestic violence and announced that she was no longer interested in their marriage. In reaction, Nwoko claimed that Regina was struggling with substance abuse and needed rehabilitation a statement that further fueled public outrage.
Many Nigerians, including celebrities and rights activists, have since called for Nwoko’s resignation from the Senate, citing the moral and ethical implications of his relationship with the young actress.
Despite the public fallout, Nwoko insists that the marriage followed due family consent and was never predatory.
