Seun Kuti Slams Wizkid Comparisons, Calls It an Insult to Fela’s Legacy

Grammy-nominated singer Seun Kuti warns Wizkid fans against comparing the Afrobeat star to his late father, Fela Kuti.

Seun Kuti, the son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has described it as an insult to compare Afrobeats superstar Wizkid to his father.

Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Seun addressed Wizkid FC, the singer’s fanbase, urging them to stop equating the Ojuelegba crooner with Fela. He emphasized that such comparisons undermine the legacy of the Afrobeat maestro.

“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela… It is actually an insult [to compare Wizkid to Fela],” Kuti said.

He criticized the fanbase for disrespecting Fela out of ignorance rather than defiance and pointed out that overzealous fan rivalries have negatively impacted the Nigerian music industry, even preventing collaborations between artists.

“I think Wizkid FC is the most ignorant fanbase in the world… You need to stop misbehaving. Concentrate on your artist. Can’t you enjoy their music without comparing it to something else?” he added.

Seun’s remarks highlight the ongoing tension between traditional Afrobeat purists and modern Afrobeats enthusiasts, emphasizing the need to respect the cultural and musical legacy of Fela Kuti.
