Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has become the first African female artist to record seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The milestone was achieved after her song “What You Need” debuted at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total appearances on the chart to seven.
With this achievement, Tems now ties fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African acts with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries, having seven each.
In 2022, Tems previously made history as the first African artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with her collaborative hit “Wait For U”, alongside Future and Drake.
The singer is expected to break the tie soon, as J. Cole’s “Bunce Road Blues”, featuring Tems and Future, is projected to debut on the chart next week.
