On Monday, June 23, police announced that they had opened an inquiry after finding several bodies in the Mediterranean Sea with their hands and feet bound.
At least five bodies with their hands and feet bound have been seen by Civil Guard vessels since mid-May, according to the regional daily Diario de Mallorca. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, police believe the victims might be North African migrants.
Investigators told Diario de Mallorca that the migrants might have been bound and tossed into the sea while crossing, possibly because of a disagreement with their smugglers.

Marga Prohens, the regional president, told local media that the discovery reveals "the cruelest side" of the unofficial migratory route.
Hundreds try the shorter route from north Africa to the Balearic archipelago in the Mediterranean, but the majority of the tens of thousands of migrants Spain receives on their way to Europe arrive via the Atlantic's Canary Islands.
