An Alabama second-grade teacher who was recently named Teacher of the Year has been arrested and fired after a disturbing video surfaced showing her striking her 12-year-old son more than 20 times with a belt inside their Mobile home.

Viral Video Shows “Savagely” Beating 12-Year-Old Boy

The teacher, Nicole Staples, went viral after someone leaked a video showing her repeatedly whipping her young son while shouting profanities.

In the footage, Staples can be heard yelling:

“You’re not f**king sorry!”

She continues beating him while the child screams and cries. At one point, she shouts:

“If you were f**king sorry, you wouldn’t make extra work for everybody in this house!”

Another person is seen quickly walking past as the assault continues. Two other children were reportedly in the home at the time.

Eldest Son Says He Sent the Video to the School

Staples’ adult son, Jackson Staples, 24, told Fox10 that he was the one who forwarded the video to Cottage Hill Christian Academy, where his mother worked and was honored as Teacher of the Year in May.

He said he wanted to protect his younger brothers:

“I didn’t feel like she should be working at the school or even doing that to my little brothers… She’s done it to me my whole life.”

School Alerts Police; Staples Arrested for Child Abuse

The school contacted law enforcement immediately, leading to Staples’ arrest on Wednesday, November 19. She was charged with willful abuse of a child under 18, and the school confirmed she had been terminated from her position.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch described the incident as “egregious,” saying:

“That was way above and beyond any form of discipline.”

He added that additional charges are possible.

Staples Released on Bond  Flees Jail on Golf Cart

Staples posted a $7,500 bond Wednesday evening. According to Fox10, she exited the jail quickly and drove off in a golf cart, captured on video by reporters.

According to her eldest son, the three younger siblings are now staying with a relative as the investigation continues.
