Angelique Kidjo Warns Musicians Against Making Songs for Politicians

Grammy-winning Beninese singer and global music icon, Angélique Kidjo, has advised musicians to refrain from using their music to praise or promote politicians and political parties.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Female Poets Society Podcast, Kidjo explained that political power is temporary, stressing that artists who tie their craft to political figures risk losing their relevance once those leaders leave office.

“My father always used to say to us, especially to me as a singer, do not write music for any political party because they come and they go, and once they’re gone, you go with it,” she said.

Kidjo emphasized that true artists should remain voices of the people, not voices of the power, warning that political affiliations could damage an artist’s credibility and longevity.

“Write your music with your opinions, be free writing your music. Don’t be sold to somebody because therefore, you don’t become the voice of the people anymore; you become the voice of the power. And when that power shifts, you’re off the window,” she added.

Known for her advocacy through music and humanitarian work, Kidjo has consistently used her platform to speak on issues of freedom, justice, and social responsibility across Africa and the world.
