Toke Makinwa Advises Mothers Not to Bathe Newborns Daily, Sparks Online Debate

Nollywood actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has stirred conversation on social media after advising nursing mothers to avoid bathing their newborns every day.

In a video posted on her social media page, Makinwa — who recently welcomed her first child at age 40 — explained that daily bathing can harm a baby’s delicate skin. According to her, newborns are naturally clean and do not accumulate the kind of dirt that requires frequent bathing.

“Babies Are Not Dirty,” Toke Makinwa Says

Sharing her personal experience, Makinwa revealed that she does not bathe her baby every day. Instead, she opts for gentle wiping, which she believes is safer and more beneficial for newborns.

“I really think bathing babies every day causes problems. Babies are not dirty. They’ve been inside the womb for nine months, and the womb is not dirty.
I don’t bathe my baby every day because it’s not necessary. Their skin is fragile. You can wipe them instead,” she said.

Her advice has triggered mixed reactions online. While some mothers agreed with her and praised her for sharing her experience, others questioned her authority to speak on childcare practices, arguing that she is not a medical expert.

Newborn skincare is a sensitive topic for many parents, and Makinwa’s opinion has reignited discussions about traditional parenting methods versus modern pediatric recommendations. Health experts often advise minimal bathing for newborns to preserve their skin’s natural oils — a point some commenters highlighted in her defense.
