Controversial Nigerian rapper, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has revealed that late traditional music icon, Damian Azubike Nwankwo Okoye, widely known as Pericoma, was not his biological father.
The rapper made the revelation during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, where he explained that his mother, veteran singer Queen Achakpo, gave birth to him before marrying the late music legend.
According to Speed Darlington, although Pericoma was his stepfather, he grew up in the music icon’s home and was treated with love and care, just like Pericoma’s biological children.
“Pericoma is my stepfather. I grew up in his house. I was on the cover of one of his albums along with my two half-brothers. I was very young when I went to his house; I was probably nine,” he said.
He further described the late traditional singer as a kind and accommodating man, dismissing long-held superstitious rumours that portrayed Pericoma as frightening or dreadful.
Speed Darlington’s revelation offers a more personal insight into his upbringing and his relationship with the late cultural icon, whose legacy remains influential in Nigerian traditional music.
