American rapper A$AP Rocky has revealed that his mother had long hoped he would end up in a relationship with global pop star Rihanna, even encouraging him to leave another relationship to pursue her.
Speaking in an interview with The New York Times, Rocky disclosed that at the time, he and Rihanna were only friends and he had no intention of taking their relationship further.
According to the rapper, his mother was convinced that Rihanna was the right person for him and often urged him to consider her instead of the woman he was dating then.
“Rihanna has always been my boo. I’ve always had love for her,” Rocky said. “My mother used to tell me, ‘I know you like the girl you’re with right now, but I want you with Riri.’ I would tell her that Rihanna was just a friend, but my mom insisted she was the real one. Mothers really do know best.”
Rocky explained that he is grateful he did not rush into a romantic relationship with Rihanna earlier, noting that neither of them was ready for such a commitment at the time.
“I’m thankful our relationship started when it did. At any time before that, I don’t think I was ready, and I don’t think she was either,” he said.
A$AP Rocky and Rihanna first grew closer after the rapper joined her Diamond Tour in 2013. Speculation about their romantic involvement began in early 2020, shortly after Rihanna ended her relationship with billionaire businessman Hassan Jameel, whom she dated for three years.
Rocky was previously linked to model Kendall Jenner, with their relationship lasting from 2016 to 2017.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky welcomed their first child in 2022, their second in 2023, and their third child in 2025, further solidifying their bond as one of music’s most high-profile couples.
