Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has criticised Super Eagles players following their exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Morocco in the semi-final.
The Super Eagles were defeated 4–2 on penalties by the hosts in Rabat on Wednesday, a result that ended Nigeria’s quest for a fourth continental title.
Reacting in a video broadcast after the match, Bovi accused the players of lacking focus and commitment, alleging that they were distracted by social media attention, fans’ praise, and issues surrounding unpaid match bonuses.
According to him, such distractions affected the team’s passion and performance during the crucial encounter.
The entertainer further urged players to refrain from accepting national team call-ups if they are not fully prepared to commit themselves to representing Nigeria.
“Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria,” Bovi said. “So dear Super Eagles and intending Super Eagles, understand that if you are playing for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, you have the potential to unite Nigerians.”
While he excused Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty during the shootout, Bovi stressed the heavy responsibility that comes with wearing the national colours.
“I forgive Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty, but you need to understand that the weight of a nation lies in your hands,” he said. “If you go for glory before victory, more often than not, you will become the victim.”
Bovi also warned players against prioritising personal interests over national duty, insisting that commitment should come before financial concerns.
“Don’t come to the Super Eagles if you know you are not ready to give everything for the nation. If the NFF delays your payment, let it go,” he stated. “Social media has distracted you all, and the praise has gotten to your heads—not just in this tournament, but in previous ones. You don’t understand that the fans don’t like you; they like what you do.”
