Popular Nigerian actress Angela Okorie has been remanded in Suleja Prison by an Abuja court over allegations of defaming her colleague, Mercy Johnson.
The actress was reportedly remanded on Wednesday following her arrest.
Nollywood filmmaker Stanley Ontop confirmed the development and expressed displeasure over what he described as the manner in which the case was handled by law enforcement and the judiciary.
Reacting on Instagram, Stanley accused Mercy Johnson of using intimidation tactics and insisted that defamation should be treated as a civil matter, not a criminal one.
He wrote:
“Free @realangelaokorie now. Irrespective of who is involved, if you feel they defamed your person, kindly approach a competent court and sue the person involved. Omo, when will Nigeria police even learn to do their work well?”
He further lamented the speed of the judicial process in the case, adding:
“So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep this night knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison. Angela, I will never forsake you.”
According to reports by 9javibez, Angela Okorie was arrested in Lagos late on Tuesday and flown to Abuja on Wednesday morning before being arraigned in court.
