Family of Late Gospel Singer Omije Ojumi Explains Cancellation of Proposed Burial Plans

The family of late gospel singer Omije Ojumi has clarified the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of burial arrangements earlier proposed by some of her colleagues, dismissing claims circulating on social media.

The family appealed to the public to ignore misleading narratives online and allow the deceased to be laid to rest with dignity and peace.

Speaking during the service of songs and artistes’ night held on Wednesday, Omije Ojumi’s brother-in-law, Mr. Femi Eretan, explained that the family decided to independently handle the burial after disagreements arose with members of the gospel music community.

Eretan refuted reports of internal family conflict, stressing that the family remains united and composed, adding that “many people are crying more than the bereaved.”

He said that immediately after the singer’s death, the family contacted relatives from both her paternal and maternal sides, as well as community elders, to deliberate on burial plans.

According to him, the family head, Mr. Wale Akinaanu, initially agreed with some artistes who suggested that the burial should take place within a week. This decision, he said, was influenced by Akinaanu’s fragile health, the emotional shock of the moment, and the wish to avoid keeping the body in the morgue for too long, given the painful circumstances of her death.

However, Eretan said further discussions within the family led to a reconsideration of that decision.

The family concluded that since Omije Ojumi was survived by her husband and children, and with both her parents deceased, she deserved a more dignified burial carefully planned by her family.

He revealed that he tried to reach the artistes’ spokesperson who had volunteered to organise the burial, requesting a phone conversation to explain the family’s position, but the request was declined.

Eretan added that he also contacted an elderly member of the group, who allegedly responded, “If it is about Omije Ojumi, I am not interested.”

He said communication later broke down completely, leaving the family with no option but to take full responsibility for the burial arrangements.

Eretan also condemned a viral video by a self-acclaimed prophet which alleged that the family was publicly soliciting funds and seeking intervention from gospel artistes.

He firmly denied the claim and warned that legal action would be taken if no evidence is provided to support such allegations.

“I am from Ondo State and I understand the rudiments of the law. Anyone who claims the family begged for burial funds must provide proof,” he said.

Despite the controversy, Eretan expressed gratitude to artistes who honoured Omije Ojumi privately and showed support by attending the service of songs.

9javibez reports that only a few guest artistes were present at the Lagos service of songs held in her honour.
