Mercy Eke Says She Is Open to Having Children Out of Wedlock

Nigerian reality TV star and Big Brother Naija Season 4 winner, Mercy Eke, has stated that she is open to having children even if she is not married.

Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the media personality explained that although she is not actively trying to get pregnant before marriage, she would keep the child if it eventually happens.

Mercy Eke said:
“I won’t go the extra mile to get pregnant out of wedlock. But if it just happens, I would leave it and I would have my baby.”

The BBNaija star added that she hopes to have three children—preferably girls.
“I want three kids; two girls and one boy or three girls. I love female children,” she noted.

“Stigma Only Applies to Poor Women” — Mercy Eke

Eke argued that the societal stigma associated with single motherhood mostly affects women who are not financially stable.

According to her:
“Even if I don’t get married, I would still have kids. What most people don’t know is that the stigma of being a single mother only applies to women who don’t have things going well for them.”

She added that successful single mothers are often admired and desired by men:
“The women who are shattering glasses, men are begging them for marriage. I can get married tomorrow if I want to.”

“It’s Not About Suitors — I Haven’t Found What I Want”

Mercy Eke clarified that she receives plenty of proposals, but hasn’t met a man who meets her standards.

“What I want in a man, I have not seen it. It’s not like there is no suitor. There are plenty… So, even if I have a baby, I would still see a man.”

Her comments have since sparked conversations online about marriage, independence and societal expectations placed on women.
