Rita Daniels, mother of Nollywood star Regina Daniels, has lost her bid to become President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
The election, held on Saturday during the Guild’s annual general meeting in Benin, Edo State, saw Rita defeated by the AGN National Secretary, Abubakar Yakubu, who will now succeed Emeka Rollas as the Guild’s new President.
Yakubu polled 116 votes, narrowly defeating Rita Daniels who secured 113 votes, while three ballots were declared void.
His emergence marks a historic moment, as Yakubu becomes the first Northern actor to lead the AGN since its establishment in the 1990s.
The outcome comes just weeks after outgoing president Emeka Rollas stirred controversy by suggesting that Regina Daniels “needs help” and advising Rita to focus on her daughter’s well-being rather than contesting for the Guild’s top seat.
