Mercy Johnson Faces Backlash Over N25,000 Menstrual Care Brand Endorsement

Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie has come under heavy criticism on social media after being unveiled as a brand ambassador for Girls Tag, a menstrual care brand reportedly selling for N25,000.

Girls Tag, described as an all-in-one period care package for girls aged nine and above, recently launched with Mercy Johnson and her daughter, Purity Okojie, as ambassadors. Actress Regina Daniels was later announced as another ambassador for the brand.

However, the product launch has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians describing the price as unrealistic and insensitive amid the country’s economic hardship.

Several critics argued that millions of Nigerian women and young girls already struggle to afford basic sanitary products, often resorting to unsafe alternatives or missing school during menstruation.

Reacting online, a user identified as @Lai defended the actress, stating:

“Not everyone is a philanthropist. Nigeria’s problems are not everybody’s problem. This is business, and she knows her target customers.”

Another user, @MsJorji, criticized the endorsement, saying:

“Mercy Johnson, you are an embarrassment to women. In a country where women struggle to afford sanitary pads, you want to charge 25k for one.”

Social media users also questioned the accessibility of the product, with some insisting that sanitary pads should be treated as essential healthcare items rather than luxury products.

@Rebekah wrote:

“Nigeria is a poor country. Elitism should never extend to the basic rights and dignity of girls and women. How many Nigerians can realistically afford N25k monthly for sanitary products?”

Another user, @Ara, added:

“Sanitary pads are meant to be affordable. Since when did pads start having a target audience?”

The controversy has continued to generate debate online, with many Nigerians calling for more affordable menstrual hygiene products for women and girls across the country.
